The Baroque Calvary winding from Šmarje pri Jelšah to the Church of St. Roch on the nearby hill is the most picturesque in the former Inner Austria. It is considered a perfect Passion composition of sculpture, painting, and architecture and the most extensive Passion complex in Slovenia. At the top of the Calvary, enter the Church of St. Roch, where, in addition to breathtaking views from the terrace, you will also be surprised by Baroque artistry.

Baroque Wonders Everywhere.
It is no surprise that this region has witnessed many Baroque miracles. In the Church of the Virgin Mary on Sladka Gora, an exceptional example of Baroque total artwork from 1754, over 400 miraculous intercessions have been recorded. These heavenly favors are visualized on the church walls, where visitors can still admire painted scenes of miracles, each numbered. Do not miss the main pilgrimage event, the Pilgrimage Triad of Sladka Gora, Tinsko, and St. Roch (August 12–16).
On August 12 and 13, pilgrims first visit Sladka Gora, where on the evening of August 12, they revive the traditional candlelight procession and sing the five litanies. This event was once called the “pilgrims’ garden” or “dancing the garden.” On August 13, a pilgrimage Mass is held. On the eve of the Assumption of Mary, August 14, a candlelight procession takes place in Tinsko. The pilgrimage triad concludes on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption, and August 16, the Feast of St. Roch, at the Church of St. Roch above Šmarje pri Jelšah.
